Aims and outcomes

The aim of the project was to create a social space for visitors and patients in the assessment ward. An underused relatives' room at the end of the ward was identified and following a space review the project area was enlarged to include a further room and the ward garden.

A large open, light and easy navigable area has been designed with open access to a glass roofed area and garden. Furniture and furnishings have been chosen and placed with care to provide a range of spaces for people to sit on their own or in groups.

Artworks from a local college together with paintings of local scenes decorate the walls. Interesting artefacts are available to look at and touch and a wide selection of books has been provided to aid discussions. Visitors are able to make drinks and snacks using the kitchenette area while everybody is encouraged to explore the garden or just to sit under the glass canopy to enjoy the view.
