Location
Cherry Ward, Bowmere Hospital, Chester
Aims and outcomes
The aim of the project was to create a balcony garden and adjoining social space for patients with dementia and their carers in this first floor ward.
The garden has been built out from the ward area and allows patients free access to an outdoor space. Robustly constructed, the area includes seating and artworks of plants and butterflies on the surrounding glass screen. Raised beds will enable patients to help care for the plants which have been chosen to add interest and colour, and there are distant views of the surrounding hills and a small water feature to enjoy.
The adjacent ward area has been redesigned to provide a social space for patients and relatives from where they can enjoy views of the garden or have a snack. A small room off the garden has also been redesigned where patients can choose from a range of lighting effects and other sensory equipment to suit their particular mood.
