HM Prisons Awards update

We were delighted to receive 18 applications for this year's HMP Awards, with the majority of the winners announced in January. Our thanks go to all of you who submitted a proposal.

Following a very tough selection process the following schemes were chosen for their exemplary work:

  • HMP/YOI Eastwood Park – redesign of external area to provide a therapeutic garden for elderly prisoners
  • HMP/YOI Exeter – creation of a palliative care suite and visitors area
  • HMP Forest Bank – adaptation of ward area for palliative care patients
  • HMP Long Lartin – creation of a palliative care suite
  • HMP Risley – creation of palliative care suite
  • HMP Stocken – creation of an adapted wing cell for prisoners with dementia, improvements to way-finding and the healthcare waiting area for elderly prisoners
  • HMP Whatten – creation of an adapted wing cell for disabled prisoners, those with dementia or requiring stroke rehabilitation
  • HMP Whitemoor – Creation of an enhanced care cell in the inpatient wing

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that there are eight awards listed!

The winning schemes will receive £20,000, with the individual prisons providing an additional £5,000. Each team includes at least one previous EHE team member who will have attended a two day development programme at Horwood House in April.

We are indebted to Offender Health and Michael Spurr with whose help we were able to fund two additional awards.

We will be updating you on the progress of the teams in future newsletters.
