Lord Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review

In July 2007, Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson asked Lord Darzi to conduct a 'once in a generation review' of the health service in England, consulting with patients and staff to set priorities for the next 60 years, with a focus on access, quality and safety. The review, Our NHS, Our Future, was published in June 2008.

King's Fund activities

In the run-up to the launch of the review, we informed the debate by publishing research and drawing together key stakeholders to debate the most pressing themes in Lord Darzi's review.

Debates

Our series of three debates in spring/summer 2008 brought together leading experts and stakeholders. We started with an examination of national and local accountability and governance in the NHS, specifically addressing the issue of a constitution for the health service (listen to soundbites from this event); continued with a discussion on the future of out-of-hospital care; and culminated with a discussion with Professor Lord Darzi following the publication of his final report.

We have also produced a briefing providing the background of the review and asking what the final report might recommend:
