Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives – the government's new anti-obesity strategy

23 January 2008

Today the government published Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives, a cross-departmental strategy designed to tackle England’s growing obesity crisis by addressing the different aspects of everyday life that affect our food and lifestyle choices. This £327 million anti-obesity strategy follows a report published by the government’s Foresight Programme last October called Tackling Obesities: Future choices.

Promoting healthier food choices, encouraging people to become more physically active and offering personalised support and advice are all included in the strategy, along with an emphasis on improving and encouraging children’s health. The government is also keen to investigate the use of incentives to encourage people to adopt healthier behaviours, with the help of employers and the leisure and food industries.
