Hilary Thomas

Hilary qualified in 1984, determined to take up a career in oncology. After posts in London and a PhD at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund she was appointed Senior Lecturer in Clinical Oncology at Hammersmith Hospital in 1994 and then Professor of Oncology at the University of Surrey in 1998.

Hilary was an elected member of the GMC for nine years. She was Clinical Director of a Cancer Network (2001-4) and then Medical Director (from April 2004) of the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Between 1998 and 2007 she had a clinical role as a consultant, treating gynaecological cancers and continued to lead her research group.

Hilary has a long experience of clinical engagement challenges including the development of tumour groups and multidisciplinary teams as well as a medical director role where she successfully implemented Hospital at Night. 

She has taught on the Management Course for Specialist Registrars at The King's Fund since 2006. She became a member of the Clinical Advisory Group for Healthcare for London in January 2008 and has been a Board member of the British Association of Medical Managers since 2006. She took up the post of Group Medical Director of Care UK in April 2007.
