Programme outline
Drawing on state-of-the-art, evidence-based adult learning methods, this six-day leadership training course will:
- create an accurate personal diagnosis of your current dilemmas and individual skills
- build a communal understanding of the dimensions of personal impact and credibility
- boost your use of voice and body language in non-threatening playful interaction by working with an accomplished actress and theatre director
- develop advanced communication skills in giving and receiving 'clean', constructive feedback.
Outstanding leaders have a high degree of self awareness – they know their own strengths and limitations, and they use failure or misjudgement as an opportunity for learning. This leadership training will help you become more aware of your own emotions and of your personal impact on others, particularly when you are under pressure.
We also aim to improve your ability to pace yourself and stay for the long haul when necessary. This self-management, supported by emotional self-awareness, will help you to regulate your behaviour, even when provoked.
There is much at stake in leading health services. Outstanding leaders bring a sense of integrity to what they do, to help them to deliver to the best of their abilities. The training will enable you to be open to innovative thinking and to encourage creativity and experimentation in others too.
A safe environment is vital for this degree of personal development. The training provides clear boundaries of confidentiality and the freedom to experiment and take risks. We will have a maximum of 18 participants, guided by two skilled programme directors.
The programme, which will take place at the King's Fund, will consist of five days' training, plus one follow-up day to refresh and consolidate your learning.
We will use videos of individual performance as before and after measurements of skill improvement, and you will take away your own video tape of your progress.
The training will also include a master class with an individual who demonstrates exceptional levels of personal power and authority, such as Baroness May Blood, who has humble origins and had no institutional power until late in life.
Benefits for you and your organisation
- improved communication skills so that you can manage performance (your manager's and peers) in a more powerful and politically sensitive way
- increased ability to influence and lead others in difficult situations
- increased self-belief and honed critical behavioural skills.
