Management for Clinical Directors

Boost your confidence and management skills as a clinical director.

Balancing clinical and managerial responsibilities can be a challenge, especially in today’s NHS. This Management for Clinical Directors programme will prepare you for political and ethical dilemmas and help you deal with conflict and poor performance. The training will equip you with strong leadership skills and the authority to cope with uncertainty and change.

Who's it for?

The training is designed especially for people new to the clinical director role or who have had little or no formal management training or development. It is ideal both for doctors and for clinical directors with other clinical backgrounds such as nursing.

A motivating course that addresses the issues of making the best of yourself and your team.

Programme outline

Clinical directors face particular challenges in the rapidly changing NHS. Delivering patient care, transforming services and working effectively with diverse professional groups all require high-level management and leadership capabilities.

The training content of Management for Clinical Directors is constantly updated to reflect the current working environment. It looks at the implications of the latest policy and other developments in the NHS, and helps participants understand how they and their colleagues can have a strategic impact on their local health economy.

It addresses the stresses you may face as a result of interpersonal conflict and difficulties in teamworking, and provides you with the confidence to deal with conflict and develop and maintain robust relationships.

How you will learn

The nine-day training programme is broken down into three modules of four days, three days and two days, based at the King’s Fund in London. These are spread out over several months so you can try out what you have learned, and reflect on this with your fellow participants.

The training builds on existing experience and uses formats designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning. The emphasis is on putting theory into practice, with practical exercises and role playing.

Group work with other clinical directors offers an opportunity to work together on problems you’re facing in real life, and to share feedback with each other. These development sets will help you establish a strong network of colleagues who will provide you with ongoing support long-term after you’ve returned to your workplace.

What the training covers

The King’s Fund has been running the Management for Clinical Directors training for more than 13 years, constantly revising and updating it to reflect current circumstances.

The role of clinical director is more important than ever in delivering the highest standards of patient care. This year’s training includes:
  • how to promote cohesive working within your directorate
  • how to work more effectively with other disciplines
  • how to handle change effectively and cope with uncertainty
  • how to deal with any conflict between doctors and other professionals in the team you’re leading
  • how to tackle any unsafe practices.
The training agenda also looks at the role of the clinical director, and wider issues of power and politics. You will learn how to think and work strategically and use resources effectively and creatively.

Benefits for you and your organisation

You will emerge from the programme with:
  • a broader perspective
  • greater insight into your own leadership style
  • more confidence and stronger leadership capacity.
The training gives you the chance to step back from day-to-day responsibilities, reflect on your capabilities and plan for future progression in management.

You will:
  • discover what matters to you in your role as clinical director
  • learn how to balance clinical perspectives with your management role
  • find new ways to tackle challenging situations.
Working in groups offers the chance to experiment with new ways of relating to colleagues and to receive feedback on your behaviour and performance in a safe setting. The programme will introduce you to a network of people who will support your future development.

On an organisational level the training will help you:
  • take a more strategic view and understand what matters to your organisation
  • manage diverse groups of people within a rapidly changing environment, including doctors and multi-disciplinary teams
  • deal with political and ethical dilemmas.
