Management and Leadership for Clinicians
As the NHS moves forward with its programme of modernisation, there is an increasing need for clinicians who can make an effective transition into management and leadership roles. Our Management and Leadership for Clinicians programme can help you rise to the challenge. Equip yourself with practical and emotional tools to reach your potential as a leader and discover how to manage effectively people from different clinical specialisms. You will develop personally and professionally, giving yourself the opportunity to achieve significant career progression.
Who's it for?
This programme is intended for anyone with a clinical background or training who is taking on or planning to take on a managerial or leadership role within the NHS. We look for 24 participants for each of the programmes, with roughly equal numbers of the following main groups:
- nurses: ward managers, senior nurses, clinical nurse specialists, senior midwives and nursing or midwifery managers
- doctors: specialist registrars, consultants and GPs
- other clinical professionals: allied health professionals, senior therapists, radiographers, clinical psychologists, senior scientists, pharmacists and paramedics.

Nursing Lead (PCT)
Programme outline
This programme is designed specifically for clinicians who are new to management and leadership roles. Our aims are to give you the skills and confidence you need to lead and manage in the rapidly changing NHS and to ensure you have the tools you need to support your future development.
A unique feature of the programme is that it brings together participants from a range of clinical backgrounds. When you take on management and leadership roles you will be charged with the responsibility of encouraging multi-disciplinary groups to work together effectively – a task that presents significant personal and professional challenges. This programme will give you the opportunity to explore these challenges in a constructive way, deepening your awareness of your own and other perspectives.
How you will learn
This is an intensive five-day programme based at the King’s Fund in central London. The programme consists of a variety of formats designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your ongoing learning. These include theoretical presentations, practical exercises, problem solving sessions and role plays so you can put your learning into practice. There will also be opportunities for you to share your experiences and receive feedback from others.What the training covers
The programme will enable you to:- acquire a deeper understanding of your own identity, values and roles and how these impact on your behaviour
- understand the different world views of managers and clinicians
- differentiate between leadership and management
- develop strategies for adapting and implementing change
- discover new ways of working creatively with diversity
- learn how to get the best from people
- sharpen your awareness of group dynamics
- learn to communicate and negotiate more effectively
- think consciously about how you present yourself
- gain insight into what it means to be political and find out how to use this to your advantage.
