Barbara led the learning and development functions at both the Department of Health and the Department of Education and Skills, where she designed and delivered leadership development programmes for senior leaders. Before joining the Civil Service, she held similar roles in higher education and the private sector.
A Fellow of the CIPD, she holds a Masters degree in Coaching and Development, and has coached and supported senior leaders up to and including board level. She has a particular interest in emotional intelligence. A founder member of the Coaches Across Government network, and a qualified therapeutic supervisor, Barbara has supervised internal coaches in a number of government departments.
Her early career was in social work, mental health, research and lecturing. She is now a Visiting Senior Fellow at Cass Business School and an Associate with the National School of Government. A qualitative researcher, she has a PhD in Social Policy from Edinburgh University, and has published from her research and practice.
