Boston study tour
A three-day study tour designed for experienced medical leaders. This intensive tour includes visits to some of the most forward-thinking commissioning and provider organisations in Boston.
Who is it for?
This programme will be of particular interest to members of clinical commissioning group governing bodies and leaders of provider organisations interested in learning more about contracting for quality.

This study tour is focused on the commissioning, contracting agenda. If you are keen to understand more about the practical aspects of contracting for quality, this tour will provide you with a first hand view, meeting and discussion with people who are able to share a rich epxerience with you.
What will you do on this study tour?
We will visit four organisations: a large group practice using consortia-based contracting; two commissioning organisations who have embedded quality measures into the contracting process; and an acute provider organisation with formal links to the primary care providers.
Throughout the tour we will:
- explore the roles of health insurers, medical groups, hospitals and other providers of care
- learn about innovations in payment systems, such as the Alternative Quality Contract, and how risks are shared between insurers and medical groups
- explore how medical groups relate to hospitals and how they develop integrated models of care
- learn about the different roles played by medical leaders and the training and support they receive
- learn how insurers relate to medical groups and work with them to control costs and improve quality.
