Learning network on integrated care for health and wellbeing boards

The learning network will provide opportunities to develop ideas and share learning about how health and wellbeing boards can deliver their core functions of promoting integrated care, improving the health and wellbeing of their local population and ensuring a strategic approach to commissioning effectively.

Participants will have the opportunity to work through issues in a safe space with colleagues facing similar challenges. Particular emphasis will be placed on the local authority and clinical commissioning group (CCG) relationships at the heart of the board.

What will you do?

External speakers will share their expertise, and the group will draw on insights from The King’s Fund’s research and policy work on health and wellbeing boards, integrated care, and public health. The network will also draw on information from the Fund’s fortnightly bulletin on health and wellbeing boards and on work the Fund is doing to support the implementation of integrated care. Participants will be invited to relevant events at The King’s Fund, and we will also share relevant new publications.

The aim is to enable members to develop thinking about the ambitions and aspirations for their board, alongside a practical focus on governance, ways of working, and stakeholder engagement. The network aims to support members in developing arrangements that suit local needs and circumstances, and to develop their own leadership and change management capacity.

Who is it for?

This learning network is for the chairs and vice-chairs of health and wellbeing boards who are committed to supporting their board members to become effective system leaders and champions of service integration.

  • identify the main challenges facing boards in their first year and how they can be tackled
  • explore how chairs and co-chairs can develop effective leadership within and beyond the board and consider their own personal development needs to achieve this
  • learn lessons from early experience of developing joint strategic needs assessments and joint health and wellbeing strategies
  • assess options for board engagement with external stakeholders, communities of place, and patient, public service and user groups
  • consider different ways in which providers can be engaged effectively and appropriately in the work of the board
  • offer signposting to resources and support

Format and facilitation

An agenda for each meeting will be agreed in advance and will cover two or three topics (including those identified above), each of which will be led by a different member of the learning network.

The learning network meetings will be organised by The King’s Fund. The network will be facilitated by Richard Humphries, Assistant Director in Policy at The King’s Fund, and Katy Steward, Assistant Director in Leadership Development, with support from Andrew Cozens, independent consultant and former Strategic Lead for Adult Social Care and Health at the Local Government Association.
