Board Effectiveness

A programme to develop effective behaviours for the whole board, which:

  • is free to members of The King’s Fund Board Leadership Programme
  • provides 2 observations of the board in action
  • gives feedback to the Chair/Chief Executive on further board development
  • provides a written report with recommendations for development of the board

The key role of the board is to ensure the organisation delivers effectively and efficiently. To do this the board needs to provide a strategy, vision, and leadership, whilst ensuring accountability for current performance.

By focusing on behaviours and relationships the board will get the best from its individual members. Boards should continuously review their effectiveness including the dynamics, relationships and overall performance of the board as a team.

The Board Effectiveness process

Two facilitators from The King’s Fund will work with your board, observing the board in action on two occasions.  This is for the whole board, not just non-executive directors or a sub-set of the board.

The Board Effectiveness Framework

The Board Effectiveness Framework is a unique framework developed specifically for observing key areas of board behaviour. The King’s Fund is highly familiar with two strong frameworks already in existence: the NHS Leadership Qualities Framework, which defines senior leadership competencies in the NHS, and the NHS FT Code of Governance for Foundation Trusts.

The Board Effectiveness Framework looks at 3 core areas of the board behaviour:

  1. External engagement
  2. Constructive challenge and trust
  3. Strategic leadership
