Board Leadership Programme

The Board Leadership Programme actively supports the development of a community of London‘s non-executive directors. The events are held at The King’s Fund, a central London location to which all members are warmly welcomed. The development of relationships between boards is seen as key to successfully implementing Healthcare for London, and events are structured to allow board members to share their learning during the sessions and connect informally afterwards.

The programme has five modules to both provide timely content and stimulate relevant discussion for boards. Covering policy-specific and London-specific issues, it assists busy board members in staying up-to-date and understanding the latest issues. The King’s Fund is respected for the independence of its commentary and analysis, and the programme enables participants to hear first hand from policy experts. For non-executive directors who are new to the health world, the programme offers introductory sessions on finance and the NHS.

The programme aims to provide support for personal and board development through a range of vehicles including expert leadership seminars, board observations and learning sets for chairs. The King’s Fund has a strong track record in developing leaders in health care, and members of our expanded leadership development faculty will be happy to work with you to develop your skills at board level.

The BLP is funded by the NHS trusts in London, including foundation trusts.

The programme

The programme offers:

  • a flexible and responsive programme; developed to meet the emerging needs of individuals and organisations
  • opportunities to enhance the contribution of chairs and non-executive directors’ work on specific issues affecting London
  • a forum whereby chairs and non-executive directors are supported and enabled to make an enhanced contribution towards improving board effectiveness, corporate governance and the development of unitary boards.

The programme has demanded a more focused approach to meet the complexity and challenges of the radical changes in the NHS. We have worked to ensure that this programme meets the new demands and offers the opportunity to keep up to date in the health reform, and offers support in sustaining the core activities of the NHS.

The programme as a whole provides a mix of skills development, NHS awareness events, workshops and seminars. Chairs and non-executive directors are invited to put together their own portfolio of learning. For many non-executive directors this is done in consultation with their chairs and may be discussed in the appraisal process.

The combination of practical learning, experiential learning and informed debate aims to provide non-executive board members with the competence to fulfil their roles to meet the challenges of the changing NHS.
