Using the library

Visit our central London library

Anyone is welcome to visit our library in central London, where our team of expert librarians is on hand to advise and assist you in your search for information.

If you would like, we are happy to give introductory tours to help you make the most effective use of our resources. Tours are held by appointment only for individuals or groups and last 20 minutes. Please contact us to arrange your tour.

The library is fully wheelchair-accessible. We have a hand-held closed circuit television; a scanner; and the library database and internet are available with magnified screen and sound.

If you work in the NHS in England, you may also be able to access our catalogue through the National Library for Health (NLH). Staff and students at academic institutions may be able to access our catalogue through the Health Management Information Consortium (HMIC). NLH and HMIC enable you to search across a number of health management and clinical databases, including ours, giving you access to a broader range of material and search options.

Request a literature search

If you are unable to visit our library, we can carry out literature searches of our catalogue on your behalf, free of charge. The search results, containing the bibliographic details of up to 40 references, will be posted or emailed to you.

If you would like to request a search, please complete our Ask a librarian form or phone us on 020 7307 2568. Please refer to our tips on literature searches which will help you frame your question. We are unable to carry out literature searches for full-time students.

We can also search other databases, such as ASSIA, HMIC and Social Care Policy & Practice, for health and social care management related information. We charge £45.00 per search (plus an additional charge of 50p for each record after the first 40). Please contact us if you would like to take advantage of this service.

Set up an inter-library loan

We can loan certain materials to other libraries (but not to individuals), using the British Library inter-library loan scheme. If you are a member of the public, please contact your local library and ask them to explore this possibility with us on your behalf. Librarians interested in seeking an inter-library loan should contact us for more information.
