Patient choice research reports

As part of our work programme on patient choice and personalised health care, we are investigating patient and GP behaviour arising from choice at point of referral.

The following reports detail research undertaken jointly by RAND Europe, the King's Fund and City University.

Understanding Patients’ Choices at the Point of Referral

This report, published in May 2006, provides insight into the factors which are likely to drive patients’ choices at the point of referral, exploring the types of information patients require and the value patients place on specific aspects of hospitals’ performance. The study reveals that patients value clinical quality the most when choosing a hospital to be treated at.

London Patient Choice Project Evaluation

The London Patient Choice Project was established to offer choices to patients who were clinically eligible for treatment and had been waiting for treatment at an NHS London hospital beyond a target waiting time. This report, published in 2005, reveals that patients are more likely to choose to be treated at a hospital with a good reputation rather than one that has shorter waiting times.
