The King's Fund Annual Conference 2008

Reshaping the NHS: Creating locally driven evidence-based service change

In brief

This sell-out event explored key themes raised in Lord Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review, which made it clear that all future NHS service change should be clinically driven, evidence-based and locally led – with input from patients and the public. The conference looked at what this means for policy development and for practice, exploring different types and applications of evidence, the changing role of service commissioner and providers in identifiying and driving change, and lessons from national and international examples.
The conference explored three key types of evidence:
  • Modelling. In an uncertain environment, how can changes be modelled to better understand their likely impact?
  • Understanding patients and the public. How can the best consumer and market research methodologies be adapted to help shape high-quality services that meet and exceed user expectations?
  • Using routine data. How can the potential of data that is, or could be, gathered routinely be harnessed?
