About this event

Jane Cummings launched Compassion in Practice in December 2012 and the implementation plans were launched in April 2013. Jane will discuss the shared purpose as nurses, midwives and care staff aim to deliver high quality, compassionate care, and to achieve excellent health and wellbeing outcomes. Compassion in Practice builds on an engagement strategy with over 9,000 nursing, midwifery and care staff. The national vision and strategy recognises the changing landscape of the health care sector and articulates the nursing and midwifery profession’s role in delivering health care and improved health outcomes, both in hospitals, as well as within community settings.

The vision is underpinned by six fundamental values, the 6Cs: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment - with six areas of action to support professionals and care staff to deliver this excellent care.

There will be ample opportunity to discuss the implementation of the vision and strategy with the CNO for England.

Speakers

Jane Cummings

Jane Cummings worked as a nurse for many years, specialising in emergency care before moving into general management. She has held a wide variety of clinical and managerial roles including director of commissioning, director of nursing and deputy chief executive. Jane was the nursing adviser for emergency care in CNO’s office before becoming the national lead for emergency care in February 2004. This involved working closely with clinical colleagues and ministers to agree the 98 per cent operational standard and subsequently improve waiting times in emergency care. Jane also worked with the Royal College of Nursing to develop the role of nurses and improve the experience and care of patients.

Jane moved to NHS North West in November 2007 where she had executive responsibility for the professional leadership of nursing, quality performance, QIPP and commissioning. She was appointed as the Chief Nurse for the North of England SHA Cluster in October 2011. Jane was the national lead for Energise for Excellence programme, which provides a coherent framework to mobilise nursing staff to improve quality and reduce costs. She is the national nursing lead for the Clinical Leaders’ Network and a member of the national steering group. Jane started full time as the Chief Nursing Officer in June 2012 and published Compassion in Practice, the national vision and strategy for nurses, midwives and care staff in December 2012.
