Approach
In this project The King’s Fund set out to influence thinking about and approaches to the use of technology in health care. The study was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of ?WhatIf!consultants.
The team undertook: desk research, reviewing key publications and press reports; interviews with a range of experts in health care and industry; and a workshop in which suppliers, clinicians and patient groups discussed the important issues that determine whether and how technology is adopted.
‘Technology’ was defined as any device, product, service or application with an information technology element. The review included technologies that had a direct impact on the consumer at all stages – in helping them to maintain good health, receive care or manage a long-term condition.
The study gave examples of technologies that might be helpful in an ideal scenario and explored the potential of such a scenario to improve both clinical outcomes and the patient’s experience and to provide economic benefits.
