Medical professionalism resources

The future of medical regulation has entered a crucial period. Following an extensive consultation on the Chief Medical Officer for England's review of medical regulation and the accompanying review of the other professions, in February 2007 the government published its response on how to regulate health professionals and ensure patient safety in the UK.

Under the proposals published in the White Paper, Trust, Assurance and Safety: The regulation of health professionals in the 21st century, all health professionals will be required to prove their fitness to practice every five years.

Other measures include a radical overhaul of the processes for death certification; ensuring professional regulators are independent of government and led by an equal partnership of independently appointed professionals and members of the public; and moving from the criminal standard of proof to the civil standard, with a sliding scale in fitness to practice cases.

Our resources on medical professionalism are collated here, along with links to resources from other organisations. (Please note that these resources were collated by the King's Fund Information & Library Service in February 2007. If you would like information on any new resources in this area, please contact the ILS).
