Reaside Clinic, Birmingham

The aim of the project was to create a family visiting room in this unit which provides forensic services. Previously families were only able to see service users in the large open reception area.

The chosen design has made the room and adjoining kitchen area, previously the on call doctor’s flat, as non-institutional as possible. A new door has been created to the outside and part of the courtyard sectioned off to provide a private garden.  

The harsh strip lighting has been replaced with a softer and adaptable lighting scheme which blends well with the warm colours chosen for the furnishings.  A range of leather and other furniture has been chosen with care to give a modern feel and storage has been provided for toys and books. Following consultation with service users it was decided not to put a television in the room and their artworks now adorn the walls.
