John Appleby
John Appleby is chief economist at the King's Fund and a visiting professor at the department of economics at City University. He previously worked as an economist with the NHS in Birmingham and London and at the Universities of Birmingham and East Anglia as a senior lecturer in health economics. John has researched and published widely on many aspects of health service funding, rationing, resource allocation and performance.
Anna Coote
Anna Coote was director of health policy (health) at the King's Fund until January 2005, and director of the Putting Health First programme. She was formerly deputy director of the Institute for Public Policy Research, consultant to the minister for women, a senior lecturer in media and communications at Goldsmith's College, producer and editor for Channel 4 and deputy editor of the
New Statesman. Anna has published widely on health, social policy and gender issues.
David J Hunter
David J Hunter is professor of health policy and management at the University of Durham. He has had a long connection with the King's Fund, for which he worked as a health policy analyst from 1987 to 1989. For most of the following decade he was professor of health policy and management at the University of Leeds and director of the Nuffield Institute for Health, before he moved on to the University of Durham in December 1999. David is an honorary member of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, chair of the UK Public Health Association, and an adviser to the World Health Organisation.
Yve Buckland
Dame Yve Buckland is chair of the Health Development Agency, vice chair of South Warwickshire primary care trust, an honorary member of the Faculty of Public Health and a fellow of Warwick Business School's institute of public governance. She formerly chaired the Health Education Authority and contributed to government task forces on health and inequality. Dame Yve's professional background is in local government. From 1992-99 she was deputy chief executive and city secretary of Nottingham City Council.
Harry Burns
Dr Harry Burns is director of public health for Greater Glasgow health board, a post he has held since 1993. He is interested in the causes of health inequalities, although he also spent three years on part-time secondment to the Scottish Executive developing a strategy for tackling cancer in Scotland. Harry has a medical background and spent 15 years as a general surgeon, six of them as a consultant at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow.
Julia Cumberlege
Baroness Cumberlege is a member of the House of Lords, a patron or director of a number of charities and a senior associate of the King's Fund. She also has her own company - Cumberlege Connections. She is known for her national reports on neighbourhood nursing and maternity care and was a health minister for five years from 1992. Prior to that, she chaired South West Thames regional health authority and Brighton health authority, following a period in local government.
Philip Hunt
Lord Hunt of King's Heath is a member of the House of Lords, chair of the National Patient Safety Agency and a senior associate fellow at Warwick University Business School. He was a member of the Government for five years from 1998-2003, serving four years as a health minister. Prior to becoming a life peer in 1997, Philip was chief executive of the NHS Confederation. His professional background is in NHS management.
