Changing Days project

The Changing Days project aimed to improve the quality of day-time opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

In co-operation with the National Development Team, the project supported five development sites that offered alternatives to segregated day centres by opening up opportunities in employment, education, leisure and other social activities.

Emphasis was placed on person-centred planning and assessments; transferring resources away from day centres into the community; and ensuring that users themselves influence service planning and delivery.

Publications

Changing Days: The story so far (1997). This bulletin gives a brief progress report on the work of Changing Days. Much of its contents were written up in more detail in the following publications.

Days of Change: A practical guide to developing better day opportunities with people with learning difficulties (1998). This second study from the Changing Days project is a practical guide on how best to achieve the integration of adults with learning difficulties into the community. It builds on the vision set out in the first book, Changing Days, and reflects the experience of working in five sites around the UK.

Unlocking the Future: Developing new lifestyles for people who have complex disabilities (2000). This publication explores ways in which services need to change to provide people with learning difficulties and very high support needs with lifestyles based on their own wishes and needs. It is the last book in the series and aspects of the 'Changing days' work that are crucial to success are highlighted: from getting to know individuals and their lives and developing understanding, to the processes and best practices that facilitate the creation of lifestyles based on individual choice and community inclusion.
