Richard has 25 years experience in information system design and implementation, programme and process evaluation, and research in inter-group knowledge generation and knowledge sharing. Before coming to The Kings Fund, Richard was a lecturer in Information Systems at the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester (1990-1998) and, most recently, a lecturer in Management at the School of Management and Organisational Psychology at Birkbeck College (2004-2008).
From 1998 through 2008, Richard was Manager of Applied Research at the Education Alliance at Brown University and Research Lecturer at the Center for Innovation in Product Development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, Richard has held teaching and research positions at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Princeton University and Columbia University.
He has published about 40 publications and has around 20 years university teaching experience. He is a panel member to the Division of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences and the Office of Cyberinfrastructure at the (US) National Science Foundation.
